Dumbo... The octopus???

Hey everyone! I meant to have this out by yesterday but some technical difficulties forced me to move the publish date to the today (now tonight...). That's reliable technology for you! Anyhow, lets get on with the post!

If you are looking at this octopus and thinking, "that looks like Pearl from Finding Nemo!", you would be almost correct. Pearl is also a Dumbo octopus, although I have to say, I think the real and crochet ones are cuter than she is ( no offense, Pearl, or Pearl lovers).

I cannot put the actual written pattern on my blog for copyright reasons, but here is the link:

(You should definitely check out Mohu's blog. I love all her tiny amigurumi creations!)

Grab some yarn and a crochet hook and follow along!

Step One: With medium (4) yarn and a 2.5-4 size hook, make a slip knot.

Step 2: chain 2

Step 3: In the first chain ( the farthest chain from the hook), Single Crochet (SC) 6. Once you've done that it ought to look something like this:

Step 4: (row 1) Pull the short tail until the hole in the middle of your work closes up.

Step 5: (row 2) insert your hook into the first SC (not the one behind it, the one right across from it)

SC 2 in each stitch around until you have 12 stitches around. Now it is time for the stitch marker!

Step 6: (this is a picture of the next row because I forgot to take a pic of the stitch marker in the that last one, sorry :t ) Place the stitch marker in the base loop right underneath the hook.

Step 7: (row 3) *SC 1 in the next stitch, then 2 SC in the one right after that.* Repeat around. The picture above it what it should look like. When you have crochet in the stitch the stitch marker is in, move the stitch marker to the loop right under the hook. Do this every row. (and another hint, if you start a row with a SC 1, then a SC 2 in the next stitch, then repeat, your last stitch in the round will be a SC 2, and you will be ending on the stitch with the stitch marker in it. See, it isn't that confusing! 😁😅

Step 8: (row 4 ) SC 1 in the first stitch, then in the next, SC 2, then in the next one, SC 1. So when you do it around, it will end up being SC 1, SC 2, SC 1, SC 1, SC 2, SC 1. See what I mean?

Step 9: for 4 rows (rounds), (rows 5-8), SC around. When you are done, it should look something like this:

Step 10: (row 9) working in the front of the two stitch loops ONLY, SC 1, then SC 2 in the next, then SC 1, like in step 8 (row 4) only make sure it's in the front loops ONNNLLLYYY.

This is the inside after row 10, but I just want you to see the little ridge on the inside. We will use that later.

Step 11: (row 10) (Using both loops again) SC 1, then in the next stitch SC 3, then SC 2. I like to do the SC 1, and then say to myself "SC 3 in one, SC 3, SC 3 in one, SC 3" around. But remember at the end, you will SC 3 in one, and there will be two (including the one with the stitch marker) stitches left. Don't panic, you didn't do anything wrong. Remember that is how the pattern is. :)

Step 12: (row 11) SC 2, then SC 5 in the next stitch, then SC 3. Repeat around. It ought to end up looking something like this. :) Join to last stitch with a slip stitch, cut the yarn, leaving a tale for weaving in. Pull the cut tail all the way through when you make the slip stitch. Now weave in the tail!

Step 13: Ok, now you are almooooost done. Just a few more steps left! Now lets make the ears! With a smaller hook, chain 4, cut the yarn leaving a semi-long tail, and pull the tail all the way through. Make 2.

In between rows 2-3, sew both tails of one of the ears into the same hole, creating a loop. Repeat on the other side of the head. Tie the ends of each ear together one the inside. (I knot them twice).

Step 14: Time for this little octopus to see! Let's add some safety eyes ( or if you don't have those, make a french knot out of black yarn for eyes)! Make sure if you are using safety eyes, to pop the plastic washers (backs) on!!! Place the eyes between rows 7-8, 7 stitches apart.

Step 15: Time to make the bottom. Just follow the first 4 rows of the octopus pattern and that is all you have to do. After you crochet the last stitch, slip stitch in the next, cut yarn, leaving a fairly long tail. Pull the tail all the way through. Grab your octopus top (head down) and line up the bottom piece with the ridges in the inside on the octopus body. Grab a yarn needle and thread the bottom piece's tail through. There ought to be the perfect amount of stitches in the bottom to line up with the loops in the ridge. Start sewing! There are a few ways to sew amigurumi pieces together. You can choose the way that you are most comfortable with. Before you sew it all the way around, leave an opening big enough to put in the polyester fluffing ( or if you don't have that, use shredded up cotton balls!!!) If you don't stuff it your poor little octopus will be all squashed like that one in the pic waaaay down there. 😜

(why this weird space???)

ick, that pic is fuzzy 🙄😕👆

😊 I'll just fill up this weird space with smiley faces 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

LAST STEP!!!Stuff to your heart's content, then finish sewing up the hole, weave in the tail, snip the extra, and you are DONNEEEE!!! That wasn't so hard, right? Now you have a cute little octopus! 😊😁✨🐙

If you make this lil' octopus for your self, send me a pic via email! 🤗
